Human Social Trends Rubbing Off On Canines?

American Veterinary Medical Association has changed its’ guidelines and now classifies 6-7 year old dogs as ‘geriatric’:

‘Age may creep up on man, but his best friend gets there at warp speed.

Going from pup to grandpup doesn’t leave much prime time under American Veterinary Medical Association labels that cats and small dogs are geriatric at 7 — and large dogs at 6.

But not everyone agrees, and rescuers say those definitions can be a death sentence to older animals in need of homes.’

Which is interesting because if you look at the definition of a ‘puppy’ at least as defined by food companies – you will be told to feed puppy food up to the age of 2 years old or so. So the age bracket of ‘adult dog’ is shrinking rapidly from both sides.

A Canadian columnist Mark Steyn has been arguing for years that  adulthood in humans has been shrinking by introducing concepts like adolescence and retirement: Adolescence, like retirement, is an invention of the modern age.’

Could that same  modern age be catching up with our canine companions too?

Or is it just that the Veterinarians are looking to redefine dog as ‘old’ to charge you more for vet care??

  1. That’s scary, one of my dogs is nearly 16 and a half, what does that make him?!
