Aggressive People Are Attracted To Aggressive Dog Breeds – Study

A University of Leicester study confirms that aggressive/antisocial people are attracted to breeds with ‘aggressive reputation’:

Dogs with a reputation for aggression were more popular with people who were “less concerned with the needs of others and quicker to become hostile“.

Researchers say the results support the idea that dogs are likely to match their owners.’

This proves something that I have argued for years, namely that aggressive dog breeds are largely a product of aggression-filled upbringing by cruel and antisocial people.

Consider the kind of person who would choose to buy, say a Pit Bull based on that breed’s reputation. Will that owner give the dog appropriate socialisation and training or encourage the dog’s aggressive behaviour?

There is another more profound point here – that is the role of media and popular culture in creating the image of an aggressive breed. By popularising a breed as dangerous the media creates a ‘legend’ of an aggressive breed resulting in (certain) owners training more dogs of that breed for aggression.

Tragically, those who promote the imagery of breed aggression are probably contributing to the problem.
