Innocent Will Pay For Police Dog-Handling Incompetence

I have long argued that Police officers needs compulsory training in handling aggressive dogs. Ultimately if those skills are lacking, it’s not just the dogs that will pay dearly. Today this kind of incompetence almost claimed one victim:

‘As the undercover officer and a detective approached a building in pursuit of the alleged dealer, they encountered a 22-year-old man with two pitbulls. The official said the dogs lunged at the officers, prompting both men to fire their guns.

The shots wounded the bystander in his leg and injured one of his dogs, the official said.

The victim, identified as James Austin, was taken to Kings County Hospital and listed in stable condition.’

It is well known among dog handlers that when confronting an aggressive dog lethal force is almost never needed. There are far better and safer ways to manage an aggressive dog then pulling the trigger. On this occasion the innocent bystander got away with a bullet wound to the leg. Next time the victim may not be so lucky.
